Brothers,
Someone who is wise counts the cost of a decision. They prioritize the relative importance of things and order their days accordingly.
In today’s scripture we are told that “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” Are we to be afraid of the Lord because He has plans to harm us?
I believe not, rather we are to have a healthy respect or reverence for God because He created us and wants what is best for our lives. As young children we listen to and respect our parents and grandparents because they want what is best for us as well and provide certain rules or guidelines to keep us safe.
God in the same way has provided us with guidelines and ways to live outlined in His Word designed to provide us full lives in service of Him and our fellow man.
Once we truly know God through His Son Jesus, who incidentally are both referred to in scripture as “The Holy One”, we gain understanding through His word. This word is enlightened by The Holy Spirit upon acceptance of His substitutionary death on our behalf.
A wise man or woman would not think of approaching the end of their life, as uncertain as that day is, without a clear understanding of what is at stake by denying God and the sacrifice His Son made on the cross for them. That would be the definition of foolish.
